Well, like yesterday’s news, Apple did the thinkable. After the statement Monday warning users that hacked phones are frowned upon by Apple, it seems like Apple is now the cat and the rest of us, the mices.
Gone are the security holes of yesterday as noted here: Gizmodo Link
So now what? I know a couple of my friends already updated theirs to 1.1.1 hoping that the iPhone Dev Team will pull a rabbit out of the hat and keep their promise of unlocking the iPhone again like they did in 1.0 days, but I predict that this will take some time (maybe 2 weeks from today). That leaves me in the world of 1.0.2 . This place of cat-and-mouse seems very, very reminiscent of the days of the PSP hacker days where one hack and exploit leads to a new firmware upgrade with these “features” that Sony tries to put in to lier dumb consumers from upgrading. (and of course taking full advantage of the system) . During the PSP days, I didn’t update. I just kept playing my games until the coast was clear and new hacks were developed that included all the “bonus” features from Sony. See my post here on why Apple is shooting themselves in the foot
The iPhone seems like Sony’s PSP story repeating itself again.
What I have on my 1.0.2 firmware is awesome:
- Unlockness
- Dedicated AIM client
- Quasi GPS
- RSS reader
- Wifi detector
- Flashcard reader
- Vnotes (voice recorder)
- Games (like balls, sudoku and tiles)
- Customization of look and feel
- Shopping list
- SSH capabilities
- IRC
- And so on..
What I am missing out on is
- Itunes Wifi Store
- Double tap home and spacebar
- Louder Speaker and volume
- Other bug fixes
I can wait out for the these nice features, while, it would be nice to have, I could wait. I still feel that there is more value with these hacks from 3rd party apps versus 1.1.1 features.
For now, I am waiting and enjoying the installer.app
Good job HTD for taking one for the team on the 1.1.1 Firmware. Here is his account on updating to the latest firmware with a Jailbroken iPhone.

After HighTechDad posted a post regarding the “Unlocking” and “JailBreaking” the same thing? Something struck me about this Cat and Mouse game with Hackers and big corporations…
The exact words from Apple PR are..
Apple strongly discourages users from installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones. Users who make unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty. The permanent inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not covered under the iPhone’s warranty.
What exactly does this mean? HTD seems to believe the literal. That “unlocking” means to use the phone on another cellular provider, like Tmobile or overseas. Recall the partnership with AT&T that Apple has. They have a five year exclusive agreement in the States. That also means that the more iPhones sold, the more revenue both companies get.
- Apple gets revenue for the sale of the phone (We know about $50 profit for the 4gb flavor and $100 profit for the 8gb flavor) Source: Engagdet.com
- Consumers sign up for a 2 year contract with AT&T.That is revenue for AT&T. (There is also rumors that Apple gets kick-backs for each monthly subscription as well
In business talk, that is the ideal WIN-WIN situation. Both companies generating revenues for x amount of months thanks to an agreement.
More after the jump, but this is a huge post, and an interesting analogy between the iPhone and Sony PSP as well

I have a laptop. When I bring it on the road, it’s great to have a screen. When I’m at home, I do not want to be looking down on my screen. There are several reasons why that’s really bad including posture, eye contact with the screen and so forth.
The solution is to bring the laptop screen at eye’s level so it would be easier to work on a desk. Also, it will allow air to circulate beneath the system to keep the system cool.
