Currently an early adopter with the iPhone 4gb, I always had trouble with the “phone” aspect with my iPhone ever since activating it. When I did finally get it activated through AT&T after 2 days, my screen would say “SIM not installed”? But I was just using the phone 10 mins ago,… that’s odd. For some random reason, I would get dropped calls out of the sudden. Geographically, where I was was in San Francisco, and in Downtown on the street no less, so I shouldn’t be experiencing a dropped call especially with AT&T tagline of “The fewest dropped calls”..
Today, I was on a call with my SO and my called just dropped!! Just like the AT&T commericial noless. WTF! I finally got the nerves (and time) to hit up the Apple store in Downtown SF and ask them about it … I told them about the behavior the iPhone was experience. The Genius Bar Genuis took a look at it, and he was also training someone as well. He asked me a few questions and I told him I was on a call and it would just drop. He used the magic Apple support tool, the paperclip, and reseated the SIM… the phone still worked, but I mentioned to him that I was an early adopter and I needed my phone to work…
He went on the computer for a little bit more and research. Apparently the SIM phenomon that I am experiencing is either caused by a bad SIM or a bad SIM reader. He did notice that I had a “shieldzone” skin on it, but he did not attribute the cause to it…
About 10 mins after researching he said, “Okay, we will give you a new phone.., you will still keep allĀ your contacts and text, but you will lose pictures if you haven’t synced it up with iTunes”. I didn’t care too much for pictures as I regularly backup now, but he grabbed a new “iPhone” from the drawers and asked me…
- Him: “Do you want to upgrade the another iPhone?”
- Me: “Huh? What what do you mean? I thought you were going to swap me one?”
- Him: “Yup we are, but do you want to upgrade it to the 8gb version.”
- Me: “Sure. Is it going to cost me any?”
- He went to look at the computer for a brief second, then responded. “I’m not sure, lemme ask.”
- His assistant went with him to the back and about 5 mins later came back and said.
- Him: “Sorry, but we aren’t offer that promotion yet.”
- Me: “Oh shucks, that sucks.. I wanted the 8gb one.. oh well”
- At this point it hit me with Steve’s $100 credit coming up for Early adopters and he probably knew that I knew that.
I ended up with a new 4gb iPhone with firmware 1.0.1, but I did not ask him any more questions regarding that “exchange” because it seems that he already spoke too much about it..
Is this true? Is Steve Jobs going to offer us a $100 credit or a free upgrade to an 8gb for the 4gb iPhone fans like me?
It’s already past 14:30 PST and nothing announced from Apple. Probalby something will happen tomorrow lets hope.
