Okay, lets get this straight though. Switching jobs is a big deal! (who says it’s not a big deal!) Getting use to the new environment, co-workers, is an easy thing, but like anything new, it takes time.
After being with my last company for more than 3 years, I thought it was time to move on. I was not being challenged and I just had to do something else with my life. My new job is similiar to what I had before, but it’s slightly more focused.
The thing that is a drastically different is the commute. Before, I was working and living in the “city” so taking the “ultra-reliable” MUNI was not that bad. Despite sometimes being stuck in the tunnel for no unknown reason and having near misses of being hit with the bus, timewise, it was not that bad.
Now, working in the South Bay, I have several other commute options. Technically, the distance from my home to the job is about 40 miles.
1) Driving - Going down the 101 or (280 preferred) takes me between 50 - 60 mins. On a Monday, it will be longer. Fridays will be shorter. With the 60 mins, what can you do with that time? Bust out an iPod and listen to those damn audiobooks you procured from other sources. You can find head units that have an iPod controller option. The great thing about these units is that it allows you to charge your iPod, but also provide a higher audio clarity than the tape or FM radio option.
1) Shuttle bus - My commute time increases about 50%, but I don’t need to drive. Things I can do with my time here is
- Safely check my email
- Write up this blog post
- Listen to music
- Catch up on my sleep
- Study
There are a lot of people that have to drive because they don’t have the luxuary of a shuttle bus.
